Taking care of your body gains importance as you age – News – vvdailypress.com

What I mean by the word TLC, Tender Loving Care, is a very basic and superficial body maintenance routine daily administered by yourself. This regimen would take about 30 minutes in the morning, including taking a shower, and its result after continuing over a long period of time would be to avoid the many annoying infectious issues.

In order to practice this TLC, one needs to invest some small amount of money. TLC is a wellness regimen, and it doesn’t come free. But the amount is a trivial sum.

Now let’s begin: Which port(s) do you think gets most exposed to the hardship of our life? Of course, the two feet you stand on. Just imagine if your feet have their own soul. Here I am a bit comic. But, just think if that is you, the sole. You are always under the heavy weight of you. Wearing the pretty much airtight shoes, and under pressure. You can’t even breath. It is very hot inside, and there are many microbes trying to latch on to the skin (Ha! Ports) and develop their own colonies. Fungus colony can develop into a serious skin infection, and now your feet are pretty much semi-incapacitated. In my opinion, it is amazing that your feet faithfully stand by the mean treatment they suffer and continue to do their chores.

Enough said. My question now is what have you done to reward your feet lately? What has been your Tender Loving Care of your precious and faithful feet? My question also goes to ladies who wear the high heels — astonishingly good looking and very tall. Your feet (ladies) are pretty much standing vertically. The toes are supporting all your weight pressing down into the very small area vertically. Let’s say a young lady weighs 110 pounds. (I am being nice to you by saying 110 pouonds so that you guys won’t get mad at me and stop reading this column.) When you stand up on the both feet, then a foot bears 55 pounds on the toe area. That’s 55 pounds/3 square inches = 18 pounds/square inch. Are you aware that a car tire pressure is the same? Shocking isn’t it, ladies?

Now, worse news for you, ladies. When the young lady prances on the city street, attracting those secret admirers’ glances, your foot is carrying the full weight of your body as walking means one foot at any time carries the full weight. Naturally that means we have to double the pressure. 36 pounds/square inch. That is equivalent of high-pressure tire for industrial uses. Yes, your toes are carrying the full weight (if you are a svelte 110 pounds) of your body, and some of you ladies must be a bit heavier than 110 pounds. (Don’t get mad at me. That is equivalent of killing the messenger.)

Now let’s get back to my original question. What have you been doing to your feet in terms of TLC, the Tender Loving Care?

When you take shower in the morning, or for that matter any time, what do you do to your toes? I am sure the answer is “Nothing, why?” I just dry them and that’s all.

Because toes are by far the highest pressure point of your body, and surrounded by heat and high humidity, and very poor air circulation, your TLC must be through.

In order to prevent fungi development in the toe area, especially between toes, the environment of which these guys love to dwell and grow, a suggestion is to apply small quantity of antifungal topical product such as Tenactin cream in between the toes and surrounding area. Athlete’s feet is probably never fatal. But, if it develops in the toe area, and grows deeply, getting rid of it becomes a project. In the worst case, you may have to receive some operation, which will incapacitate you for a brief period. All that is totally preventable if you care your toes and apply TLC judiciously.

My suggestion is for you to carry a small stock of tubes of Tenactin, Neosporin (an antibiotic ointment) and another small tube of hydrocortisone cream (anti-itch) just in case. The last item is to prevent you from scratching an itchy spot with your sharp finger nails, and hurting the skin badly. Apply these creams in a very small quantity. This is called micro-dosing. Do not apply a large quantity once in a while. Apply a very small amount daily after your shower while skin pores are enlarged and relaxed.

The idea of TLC is to do a tiny little favor to your body ports every day. Just like a maintenance of a machine, you don’t douse the bearing with the lubricant oil. Just enough to cover the surface of the weight bearing area. And do it either daily, weekly or even monthly at an exact interval.

But I thought I could convey our idea of TLC by first writing about the toe maintenance, an all-important pressure points of our body and the most “abused” area. As I stated before, you are the driver and your body are being driven by you. If your body can’t or doesn’t function according to your command, your life would be miserable. When we reach 65+ years old, the “you” continues to believe you have nothing wrong with you. But that idea is false, PERIOD. Your abilities in all areas continue to decline. Some function faster in decline than others, but decline we go. TLC is an effective mean to positively manage back the wellness.
